Will be doing 3 more TWiV this week. Also considering live Q&A. Anyone interested? YouTube? Facebook? Twitch? All?

      • Cameron Rogers Mar 17, 2020

I am always interested in what you have to say! I would love a Q&A.
Thanks for doing this in your busy schedule Vincent.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is (ECMO). You Tube would work for me but I will go where ever you want to speak.
        Cheers,
        Cam

A live TWiV?! How exciting! \(^o^)/ though the time difference would probably be an obstacle for me.
    Thank you, Racaniello-san!

All Twiv Listeners if you are wondering why panic has escalated in the rest of the United States all one has to do is look at my Backyard of Solano County, CA its the epicenter of COVID-19 in the USA.

Panic over how quarantine victims were handled is one factor here.

Rep. John Garamendi, D-Solano, sent a letter to federal government officials urging them to correct some of the health and safety hazards reported by patients during the COVID-19 quarantine process at Travis Air Force Base.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, Travis AFB was selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in February as a quarantine location for American travelers who were evacuated from the Wuhan region. The patients who were asymptomatic were housed at the base’s Westwind Inn hotel for a 14-day quarantine process, with HHS personnel being responsible for their care. Base personnel have been directed to not have any contact with evacuees.

Travis was also selected as a quarantine location following the Diamond Princess cruise ship outbreak in Japan and the Grand Princess cruise ship, where 22 passengers and crew members tested positive for the coronavirus. Several hundred Californians who were aboard the ship arrived at Travis on March 10 after the ship docked at the Port of Oakland.

Garamendi, whose district includes Travis AFB, wrote in his letter Saturday letter that he had heard from people in the quarantine that they had been expressed concerns about an alleged lack of social distancing measures and efforts to keep the environments sanitary during the quarantine and urged HHS to provide immediate solutions to ensure the health and safety of evacuees. Garamendi addressed his letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar, while also sending copies to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you are from California, Kaiser Permanente has been named as one of the hospital chains to participate in COVID-19 Vaccine clinical trials.

With careful jabs in the arms of four healthy volunteers, scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle began an anxiously awaited first-stage study of a potential COVID-19 vaccine developed in record time after the new virus exploded out of China and fanned out across the globe.

“We’re team coronavirus now,” Kaiser Permanente study leader Dr. Lisa Jackson said on the eve of the experiment. “Everyone wants to do what they can in this emergency.”

Three of the study participants said the shots were no more painful than an ordinary season flu vaccine.

Some will get higher dosages than others to test how strong the dose should be. They will be checked for side effects and have their blood tested to determine whether the vaccine is revving up their immune systems.

Last week, Kaiser piloted two drive through testing sites in Redwood City, California and elsewhere in the Bay Area.

The testing was for Kaiser patients only.

Kaiser spokeswoman Kerri Leedy would not say where these drive-up stations are operating, because they are not open to the public. This is a pilot program currently being tested at Kaiser’s Northern California medical centers.

“We expect all our medical centers to eventually offer some form of alternative testing sites,” Leedy said.

Health authorities have said that a coronavirus vaccine would not be available for several months.

Is there anyway you can get this transcribed? I would like to be able to pass this on to a friend who can’t listen. Thank you!

  7. N95’s are very common in the US – Home Depot sold huge boxes of them up until this pandemic to “handymen” around the home (many are genuine 3M products). There’s gotta be garages full of them. What about a CDC/NIH coordinated appeal to the public to donate masks to primary caregivers, since they won’t do any good for the public? It would have to be a careful campaign, I should think, but people here in Arizona are canceling public events (banquets, etc.) on their own without being told to, so public empathy/solidarity *does* exist, perhaps enough to produce a million donated N95’s.
