    That’s called “pair bonding” species vs. “tournament species.” Sapolsky points out it’s experimentally associated, in primates with the D2 dopamine receptor *type* (IIRC – those receptors in the Nucleus Accumbens and Ventral Tegmental Areas). https://youtu.be/LOY3QH_jOtE?list=PL150326949691B199
    At least voles were shown to be experimentally adjustable between being pair bonding and tournament.
