Thank you for this summary of David Tuller’s recent work exposing the poor science that has nevertheless had an such astonishing worldwide medico-political influence over the last decade or so, leading to widespread medical and social harms to a large patient population, based on misguided conceptualisation and treatment of ME/CFS.

I’m wondering whether, in addition to blogs, videos and podcasts etc on the subject, a summary review of the flawed science and criticism of it is needed, presented as an academic paper.

Illustrating the need for such a published study, the NICE review committee has just put out a public call for evidence to inform their deliberations. Only published studies will be accepted. Therefore they will mainly only see those flawed studies promoting CBT and GET as discussed in the interview without seeing the depth and breadth of the scientific arguments against them. Due to the dominant ideology of psycho-genesis setting back biomedical research, scientific literature in the areas for which they are inviting evidence, such as the effectiveness of alternative treatments, is scant. The net result may well be that GET and CBT will be seen as still the only effective treatments, and treatment guidelines in the UK will remain essentially the same.

Although there have been a few papers critiquing individual exercise and psychotherapy trials and reviews, there’s nothing I’m aware of as yet that clearly sets out a comprehensive historical overview of what, as this interview describes, has really been a scandalous, long-drawn out culture of acceptance at the highest levels of medicine, science and public health politics, of the sort of bad science discussed here, where psychology has ventured into the realm of physical illness, with devastating consequences for the patient population.

It’s not just in the UK. Disingenuous research and science go out of their way to move the goal posts to suit the Agenda in the USA as well.
