What is in a name?
Letter? Number? Location?
It’s all Greek to me.

Times Are(n’t) a Changin’
Delta means “a change”
But if you want a game change,
Look to the vaccine.

As a layman scientist (can I say that?) I’ve just realized that when I listen to all of you discuss a paper I get a lot out of it–more than reading the paper myself. I’ve tried reading it myself but there is so much noise my seemingly aphasic brain forgets what it’s reading. That’s probably why I never became a ‘real’ scientist. So that’s one of the reasons I never miss an episode and why I can spout off quite well at parties and family discussions which irritates the hell out of people. But it’s just because I can’t contain my enthusiasm. So thanks for all the work you do individually to make this show truly informative and educational. Very best of luck!

Suggestion for the future. Is there a way to create a text file (speech recognition) of what is said on TWIV? That way it would allow you to search for a particular topic in previous episodes. The resulting text would not necessarily be exact but it would allow you to go to the time stamp in the TWIV episode. This would be so cool.

In TWIV 794, Dickson suggested that planting more trees is a simple solution. As a consultant in Arboriculture, you would think that I would whole-heartedly agree… but I do not. Until we protect our soil structure and soil quality, and actually water the trees after planting, and provide maintenance for several years, newly planted trees will probably be dead in less than 10 years. Stockpiled soil loses its original physical, chemical and biological properties through mixing and compaction. Fossil fuels are used in site prep, planting, etc. and then again for tree removals (average 7 years later). To build and protect healthy soil profiles is expensive but is critical to the success of tree planting initiatives, but is difficult to include this to projects.

  4. Hello All!

Here’s a question I saw posted on Twitter in regard to Gov Greg Abbott receiving antibody treatment after testing Covid positive:

-Could someone with some expertise explain why a person who is vaccinated and asymptomatic is receiving the Regeneron monoclonal antibody treatment?-

Thanks for all you guys and gals do. I feel saner with the incredible information you give so freely and thoughtfully. Yeay Science!

Hi. I just started listening to your podcast today—a friend told me about it and it sounds awesome 🙂 I enjoyed this episode, but there is some incorrect information regarding EEEV host and transmission cycle: Wild birds are the main reservoir for the virus. Like humans, horses are considered dead end hosts for EEEV b/c they generally do not experience a high enough viremia for mosquitoes to become infected from biting a horse. Therefore, transmission is usually from bird—> mosquito—> person or horse, not from horse to mosquito to human. You may be confusing EEEV with Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus (VEEV), for which horses are competent hosts and do get a high enough viremia to pass the virus to mosquitoes. Hope this info is helpful 🙂
