I wonder what would be the best method to eradicate mosquitoes. I don’t think it would be a very realistic goal. Even if you went with the sterile males method, life finds a way (as Ian Malcolm said in Jurassic Park!!). I’ve heard of parthenogenesis occurring in Culex fatigans, so it’s possible that this phenotype would be selected for in response to the release of sterile male mosquitoes.
It’s frustrating that we can cause the extinction of so many cool animals like Dodos and Tasmanian Tigers, but when we actually want a certain species or genus gone we can’t get rid of it no matter how hard we try.

I still to finish this podcast, I have a half hour to go. I was listening while balancing my check book and paying some bills online.

About listening to podcasts while driving: there are now ways to plug an mp3 player into a car stereo system. Unfortunately I do not have that, but I have a piece of very old technology. It looks like a cassette tape, but it has what looks like a headphone plug, originally to plug in a CD Walkman. I plug it into my mp3 player, and then put it into the cassette player of my ten year old car.

  4. A few weeks late with the podcasts. Just listened to this one yesterday. Concerning the mosquito release topic, has there ever been a release of an one organism to eradicate a different organism that has worked? With no unintended consequences? Rabbit-pox to be the case in point? Just wondering, I cant think of any but maybe the ones that work don’t get talked about.
