I read that Dr. Fauci was initially experiencing only mil symptoms so he delayed starting Paxlovid until his symptoms became more severe. It would seem that by taking this path he missed the opportunity to interrupt viral replication at a more opportune time.
While the exact timing of all of this is not entirely clear the concept of earlier the better for antiviral treatment is well established.
I love the Weekly Picks.
Having got to page 30 in “Principles of Virology, Volume I I am fairly well versed in the science.
So Doctor Despommier I move on to your pick from #915
I post to my friends on FB ‘MovieTones’. They are themes from some of my favorite movies i.e ‘The High and the Mighty’ This week I posted the original ‘Rocky I’, ‘Gonna Fly Now’. Under this post I also posted Maynard Ferguson’s interpretation, thanks for that by the way.
I wanted to impart a bit of music history unrelated to the above. George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord’ ran up against some copy right law due to its very, very close resemblance to the Chiffons,’He’s So Fine”. The Belmonts elude to this in their version of ‘My Sweet Lord” (and he leaves a link) https://youtu.be/u7X7xe0mwSY.
Hi Masters of the Twiverse,
Thanks for keeping me sane. Lots of stuff goes over my head, but less than two years ago.
On the wind turbines, the reason wind turbines were designed with the blades upwind of the pole was to reduce the cyclic stress induced by the flow shading of the pole on the blades. The old American wind pump used on farms had a trailing tail to keep the blades facing the wind. Modern turbines use sensors and a motor to keep the turbine pointed into the wind.
The Nature paper was covered on the Nature podcast, with an interview with the author who wrote to TWiV.
